In 1939, when all the white daughters of the American Revolution turned down the notable African American singer Marian Anderson to perform at a concert in nearby Constitution hall, President Franklin Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial arranged an open-air concert for her, visited by 75,000 people and broadcast to millions of radio listeners. Martin Luther King Jr. marked history by giving the speech “I have a dream” from the testimonial steps in 1963.
