  1. The Greek Theatre:

The Greek Theatre is situated within the Griffith Park, the historic Greek Theatre stands as one of the nations most admired and notable outdoor entertainment venues. This 5,900 foot amphitheater is modeled after a Greek temple.  Throughout the history, the Greek has played host to some of the known music legends from Sir Elton John to Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen to Carlos Santana and many more.   1. Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens:

The present Los Angeles Zoo opened in 1966 on 133 acres in the northeast corner of Griffith Park, just a little North of where the old zoo initially was. The most admired residents are Asian elephants, Orangutans, Chimpanzees, Sumerians tigers, koalas, meerkats, Grevy’s zebras, African painted dogs and the endangered California condors, which the zoo has a breeding program for. They also greeted the first Western lowland gorilla to be born at the zoo in more than 20 years.  Admission to the zoo is separate and costs $22 for adults 13 and older with cut price for seniors and children. 

During a visit guests are transported to African grasslands, the Australian Outback, tropical forests, and many more that serve the requirements of the zoo’s diverse residents. 

It is home to more than 2,100 animals featuring over 270 species, many rare or endangered. The botanical collection holds numerous planted gardens and over 800 various plant species with about 7,000 individual plants. Annually two million visitors visit the zoo and is owned and operated by the City of Los Angeles. 

Wander through the tropical rainforest from treetops to the river and run across the jaguar, piranhas and enormous otters to harpy eagles and cotton-top tamarins.

  1. Griffith Observatory:

The Griffith Observatory is an ornament of the Griffith Park. With its elegant Art Deco architecture, planetarium and educational displays like the Tesla coil and Foucault pendulum, this place is worth a personal observatory tour. They also have an astronomer on board who will provide guidance on how to use their telescope to observe the sky at night. Adult tickets cost $7 to enter the planetarium, but admission to the observatory is free. Apart from being a science and planetary nerd, the observatory provides an amazing view of the city, which includes an alluring view of the Hollywood Sign. It’s also among the best spots in Los Angeles to see the setting sun. To reach there you can drive to the observatory and park or you can park outside Griffith Park and hike up. There are various trails that you can choose if you are going by foot or you can hike through the shady Ferndell, connecting to the West Observatory loop trail. Griffith Observatory made an appearance in many movies but one of the most popular is “Rebel without a Cause” with James Dean. There is a bust of James Dean there that pays homage to the actor.

  1. Griffith Merry-Go-Round:

Another attraction for kids and families is the Griffith Park merry-go-round. It is a fun and historic ride, situated in Park Center between the Los Angeles Zoo and the Los Feliz park entrance. For more than 50 years the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round has been the most adored family destination in Los Angeles. The ride was brought to the Griffith Park in 1937 and was built in 1926 by the Spillman Engineering Company. Merry-Go-Round has 68 horses, all of which are jumpers. Each horse is masterfully carved and has a bridle embellished with jewels, elaborately wrapped blankets and lion’s heads and sunflowers as embellishments. A Stinson 165 Military Band Organ, known to be the biggest band organ accompanying a carousel on the West Coast, plays over 1500 selections of marches and waltz music. If the kids want to ride, the ride is not very expensive. It will cost you only $2 for a short spin. If you are headed to the zoo, you will pass right by it.

  1. Autry Museum of the American West:

The singer and actor Gene Autry established the museum back in 1988. The Autry is a museum that exclusively explores and shares the stories, experiences and perceptions of the various people of the American West, connecting the past to the present to stimulate our shared future. The Autry’s assemblage of more than 500,000 pieces of art and artifacts includes the Southwest Museum of the American Indian Collection, one of the biggest and most notable in the United States. The museum features an enormous range of displays and public programs such as, lectures, film, theater, festivals, family events and music and performs scholarships, research and educational outreach. In the Autry’s galleries are noteworthy Native American objects and depictions of the American West by significant artists and entertainers.
